What do characters 5–6 of a Japan code look like?
They are JP — the ISO country code. A code with different characters there belongs to an institution registered in another country, even if the bank operates in Japan.
Does every bank have a SWIFT code?
No. Small institutions often route international payments through a correspondent and publish that bank's code instead. Ask the recipient which code to use.
